Google looks to bring a TV set top box to your home

It’s some crazy news coming from the Google camp, but apparently they are working on a set top box powered by Android and partnered with Sony, Intel and Logitech. Now with Google being the everything box, it seems to be the next step to be the company to take over your life. Google hopes to hit a home run where others have struck out. Google will be working with the Atom based Intel processors to power these boxes. They also want to put their software on blu-ray players and Sony TVs. Google is working on a keyboard-equipped remote with Logitech to control the units.

I say they have a hard time ahead of them with the Boxee Box and Popcorn Hour (renamed PopBox) coming out soon. I don’t say that they are too late in the game, but their will be stiff competition. Even with all the HTPCs out there running Windows Media Center, which has been around since 2005 and Windows XP. The other thing will have to be how much storage is on this thing. It will need to be at least a 500GB hard drive. We shall see..

Google wants to bring 1GB download fiber to your neighborhood

googlefiber
The world’s largest search engine wants to bring you fiber to your door! The best part about it? They want to keep it open to all! No prices just yet, they want to stay competitive though, and want city, county and state officials to start proposals to see if their community could be selected for these test trials. They are claiming they will service 50,000 people and possibly up to 500,000! Their cut off date is March 26th of 2010, so if you live in Nashville, you better get a move on! I would even vote for Chattanooga a this point. Either way, wherever they put it, I want to move there! (I have till April 11th to choose a new home, hmmmm….) If you are a city official or just live in a town and think you should be nominated, then you need to head on over here. While your doing that, watch this video from the announcement:

google announces free turn-by-turn navigation

So what happens when the giant Google releases a turn by turn navigation app? I don’t know is the answer, but I have a basis. Google has announced their android based app that looks to be very promising. What’s even better is the satellite/street view that they can overlay on top of the navigation, so you can see exactly what you are supposed to be looking at while you are driving. Now this is bad for those of you who don’t have a dash mounted phone or navigation unit, as it will definitely cause you to look downward at the screen:

Google Voice sends out an invite

google-voice2

So I got my Google voice invite today. I am now a small part of the elites of Google users. Maybe not, since the Google Wave invites went out yesterday (here too). The problem is GV doesn’t have an official Apple app on the iPhone. Good thing mine is jailbroken and I can use the GV mobile that is out there for FREE!!! You want my number?? I’ll give it to you…Just kidding. The idea of what GV is, is pretty cool. Basically putting your phone calls over the internet when able and also giving you one phone number. (One number to rule them all!) Basically all you have to do, is add in your work, home and cell numbers and it rings them all. It also transcribes your voicemails for you as well. If you want more information, check it out on Google and also sign up for an invite.

I’ll get back to you in a few days or weeks to see how it’s going. Here’s a video on how it works:
