Skype CEO John Silverman and FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski will both be at an event at the Brookings Institute in D.C. today talking about the future of the internet.

Silverman will be talking about getting Skype on the 3G network of cell phone providers. Right now Skype is currently blocked over 3G networks and only allowed over wireless routers that are wired to home or business networks. Silverman thinks that this will challenge the providers which most likely won’t be favored in the cell industry. Especially since Skype traffic would be over the internet and not used against your cell phone minutes.

Genachowski will be talking about how the internet needs to stay a free and open platform. Basically that net neutrality needs to be the rule. He may reference the Comcast debacle that was back in 2008Genachowski doesn’t want the providers constricting the “lanes” of the information super highway. He wants the internet to be available to all and make sure that it is affordable as well. He makes note of the fact that in many towns, there are very few providers driving any sort of competition, and in many towns, there is just only one. He belives every household should have many different options, wired or wireless; and the same goes for the rules on both wireless and wired as far as the restrictions. Wirless providers should not be able to restrict traffic based upon their protocols or destinations.

XBOX 360 Elite Price Drop

xboxelitesmall

So a few days ago, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 elite’s price will drop by $100. Along the same lines, the Pro will drop by $50 and the Arcade  will stay the same. There also will be some new packaging with the new price drop, that you will see in the weeks to come as the retail stores get their shipments in. This is right in line with the release of the sony PS3 Slim. This new announcement still keeps the Xbox cheaper than the PS3 and hopefully sell more units.

You can see some of the new packaging at Major Nelson’s Flickr account here.

US Bank allowing check deposits over iPhone app

check_600

Now if this isn’t the way of the future, I don’t know what is! US bank is now updating their iPhone application to feature check deposit via the phones camera!! The check never has to enter the bank at all. After you take the photo of the front and back, the pictures zoom their way to the clearing department, and you get your money. You can either trash the check, or dispose of it via a shredder, but you have now saved yourself a trip to the bank! How cool is that???

RUMOR: iPod touch and iPod Nano with camera

Some chinese manufacturers are already in the process of creating new cases based upon the new iPod Touch and the new iPod nano, POSSIBLY planned for a September 2009 release. This is pretty cool, especially since cameras are being inserted into everything these days! Now if the iPod touch could email these photos via the wireless antenna, and I could MMS my cellphone buddies with an iPod Touch!

Toshiba finally gives into Blu-Ray

toshibaBluray

Anyone remember HD-DVD?? Who was making those discs??? Oh yeah, that’s right, Toshiba! Way back in February of 2008, Toshiba had to pull out of the HD format wars and succeed to Sony’s Blu-Ray. Now almost 18 months later, they have decided to produce their own Blu-Ray player! They are looking into better technologies, to speed up the players and put their own spin on it, but now with the price of Blu-ray players coming below $200, now is a good time as any!
